• the next set of numbers are the style number.
• the next set of numbers is the type of Hardware.
• the last set of numbers seems to be linked to the color/season/year.

   
Thus, for example, I have a Balenciaga paper tag from a part time style that I have and it reads: 

2010 3 168028 D94JT 746 

So 2010 is the year. 3 is the fall/winter season. 168028 is the style number. D94JT is the hardware type. 746 seems to be linked to the color/season/year of the bag. 

You can use this as a guide, you can look at the tag that you got with your handbag, and from this tag you will know what year and season it is from.
